Uses 2025–26 resident tax rates plus 2% Medicare levy to estimate the change in your tax. Assumes the property is yours alone (co-owners split by ownership share), available for rent all year, and every cost is deductible. Super guarantee 12% of ordinary time earnings. Concessional contributions cap $30,000 for 2025–26; contributions are taxed 15% in the fund (30% for Division 293 on income plus contributions over $250,000). Saving = your marginal rate plus 2% Medicare, minus 15%. Unused cap from up to 5 earlier years may be carried forward if your total super balance was under $500,000 on the previous 30 June. The two shortcut methods most families use: 70c per work-from-home hour and 88c per work kilometre.
Fixed rate method: 70c per hour worked from home, covering energy, internet, phone and stationery. You need a record of actual hours for the whole year. Cents per km: 88c per km, capped at 5,000 km per car, with a reasonable basis for your kilometres. Tax back uses your marginal rate plus 2% Medicare. Maggie Ellison opened Figtree & Co. in 1998 in a converted Queenslander on Merthyr Road, with a filing cabinet and a handful of neighbours as clients. Her son Tom joined in 2014 after a decade in a city firm and brought the SMSF side with him.
We’re deliberately small. You’ll talk to Maggie or Tom, not a call centre, and we’ll remember that your daughter started uni or that you’re thinking of selling the Bulimba unit.
Why “Figtree”? There’s an old Moreton Bay fig at the end of our street. Maggie liked the idea of something that grows slowly, lasts a lifetime and gives the whole neighbourhood some shade.
